Online PC Doctor Scam

Beware Pc and Laptop owners - If you receive a call from somebody called Online Pc Doctor or similar telling you that there are problems with your Pc, you are the attempted target of a scam.

The way it works is the caller will tell you they are working for Windows (Windows is an operating system, not a company!) or a Microsoft agent.

They will ask you to turn on your Pc and go to start, or press the windows key, go to run and type in eventvwr.exe, which contains event logs for your windows operating system. This will generally be full of errors for all Pcs. This contains logs of logon failures, failed updates etc. most of which are perfectly normal. They will tell you these error logs have been caused by downloading malware or viruses onto your Pc or something similarly ridiculous. They will then ask you to give them access to your Pc or Laptop by going to a website to "fix" these problems.

By following their instructions you are giving them full control of your computer, to do as they please. They can install keyloggers (software that can track everything typed on a keyboard, often used for stealing credit card details, bank details and account passwords and quite common in cases of identity theft). They may also install software (spyware) on your computer sending them data that you send through the Internet which they can use to gain access at any time without your consent.

For those unfortunate enough to have given control of their Pc to one of these unsolicited callers there will be a price to pay. They will try and charge you for the "service" they have carried out, they may also try to charge you for software or buy into their long-term support packages by using scare tactics or by boggling you with technical terminologies.

If you think you are the victim of one of these social engineering scams, think where did they get your name, where did they get your number and  how do they know you own a computer and how on earth do they know there is something wrong with your computer.

If you are worried that you may have fallen foul of this scam immediately get in contact with your bank or credit card provider to cancel your cards, opt out of unsolicited calls by contacting your telephone provider, make sure your Windows updates are updated and if you are still worried get in touch with us at Tech Repair to have your Pc secured and thoroughly checked for any rogue software or Malware, and insure your security software is running optimally.

  10. I have been receiving calls on numbers such as 234567 and 1234567, from a person with an Asian accent stating that he is from a company called "PC Doctor" and offering to clean up my computer. He asks that I enter the Computer System Log (i.e. RUN eventvwr) and then points to the number of red icons indicating errors, of which there are usually many. He explains that these errors are the cause of my computer being slow and crashing (which not the case) and then asks to be allowed take remote control of my computer. He is very persistent. I do not know what his game is as I just hang up at that point. He continues to call.

  11. I have recieved two phone calls from these people. They both had an E. Indian accent and told me that my computer had been contaminated. I asked her how would she know if my computer was contaminated and she said that my area was affected by the same problem and mine was one of them. Thank God I researched the issue on the computer when my mother was talking to her and told her to hang up because it was a scam. Than it was in our newspaper about this. Today I received another phone call from a man this time. I cut him off and told him it was a scam and I was going to trace the call and phone the police. I hope this people stop calling me and other people who are targeted. Why do they continue to harass us.

  14. I am very embarrassed to say that I got sucked in by these mongrels. What makes is worse is that every couple of months, they ring back and try again. The latest time they rang I told them I wanted my money back. They told me they would have to have access to my computer to be able to give my money back. When I told them this would not be happening, they told me to "Go to Hell". Thats lovely isn't it......

  15. I am embarrassed to say I fell for the concept of fixing my computer remotely. The computer was extremely slow and nearly crashed several times. I was ready to disconnect the computer and take it locally to be repaired. I was told by the technician of onlinepcdoctor the computer was infected with two viruses.
The technician worked and removed the viruses, and it is running okay, for how long, time will tell. Thanks for your communications, it gives me a lot to think about.
